Can a UAS operator also be a remote pilot?
The operator may or may not be the remote pilot. Multiple remote pilots can fly for one operator. Unmanned aircraft flying for one operator must be marked with the registration number of that same operator.
Can a remote pilot be an operator at the same time?
The remote pilot may or may not be an operator. The remote pilot does not even have to own their aircraft or be registered as an operator. A remote pilot is a person who must undergo theoretical and practical training, except to fly a drone <250g exclusively in the open category.
Can I fly my private UAS for another operator?
Yes! In this case, you must mark the aircraft with the registration number of the operator you are flying for.
The drone weighs 236 grams but has sensors. Should I register?
YES, even if your drone is lighter than 250 grams, once it has built-in sensors (microphone, camera...) you must register as an operator.
If the drone is <250 grams, do I need to take the A1/A3 test?
NO, but we strongly recommend that you take the online training on the Civil Aviation Agency website https://www.caa.gov.mk and check your knowledge through the 40-question exam.
Am I insured against damages if I fly for another operator?
In the above case, you are not the operator, just the remote pilot. You are obliged to mark your unmanned aircraft with the registration number of the operator you are currently flying for. The operator has the obligation to ensure they are insured against damage caused to third parties.
What is considered aerial work?
All activities with an unmanned aircraft, except when simply flying without any additional activities. (e.g. photography and video, terrain mapping with lidar, transporting permitted payloads... etc.)
Is insurance MANDATORY or recommended?
According to the Macedonian "Law on Compulsory Traffic Insurance" Article 47 - Liability Insurance against Damage - All drones weighing over 500 grams (0.5 kg) must be insured.
Do FPV drones also need to be registered?
Operators of unmanned aircraft are required to register when operating drones equipped with sensors capable of collecting personal data within the open category. Because an FPV drone is equipped with a camera, which is considered a sensor for collecting personal data, FPV drone operators must register.
If I am a registered operator in the EU, do I need to register again in MK?
Yes, because North Macedonia is not a member of the EU. A new operator registration is required. However, certificates of competency issued by an EU member state are recognized, and if the drone is heavier than 500g, third-party liability insurance covering MK territory is required.
Is flight announcement via drone.gov.mk mandatory for everyone?
It is mandatory for all unmanned aircraft regardless of mass.
